Spring commissioning is when boats come out of winter storage and get ready for the season. For wrapped boats, it's also the time to check how the wrap survived the winter and to fix small problems before the boat goes back in the water.
1. Remove covers carefully#
Take off covers or shrink-wrap without dragging them across the film. When cutting shrink-wrap, keep blades well away from the hull. Look at the underside of the cover too, as worn spots show where it was rubbing.
2. Wash thoroughly#
Clean off dust, mildew, bird droppings, and any residue from storage. Use a mild, wrap-safe soap and soft tools. Rinse well and let the boat dry fully before inspecting it.
3. Inspect the whole wrap#
Walk around the boat in good light and look for:
- Lifted edges and seams
- Tears, cuts, or punctures
- Dull patches from cover chafe
- Rodent or pest damage near openings
- Mildew stains, especially in shaded areas
Compare with photos from last fall if you took them.
4. Check trailer, lift, and storage contact points#
Look closely where bunks, rollers, cradles, or stands touched the hull during storage. Clean these contact points on the trailer or lift before the season starts.
5. Repair before launch#
Small repairs are much easier while the boat is still out of the water. Contact your installer early, as spring is often their busiest time.
6. Check fittings and seals#
Inspect hardware that passes through wrapped areas. Make sure sealant around fittings is intact and nothing has loosened over winter.
7. Check required markings#
Make sure registration numbers and other markings are visible and legible. Replace any that are faded or damaged.
8. Plan the season's care#
