Before a new wrap goes on, old decals and graphics usually need to come off. Leaving them under new film can cause raised outlines, bumps, and adhesion problems. Removing them carefully also protects the surface underneath, which will soon carry your new wrap.
Why old decals should come off#
- Their edges create ridges that show through new film
- Old adhesive may not bond well with new film
- Cracked or lifting decals can push the new film up from beneath
- Lettering outlines can show through lighter colors
Safe removal methods#
Most decals come off best with patience:
- Warm the decal with gentle, controlled heat to soften the adhesive
- Peel slowly at a low angle, keeping the decal close to the surface
- Use plastic scrapers or tools, never metal blades on gelcoat
- Remove leftover adhesive with a product that is safe for the surface
Old, sun-baked decals may come off in small pieces. This is normal, but it takes time.
What to avoid#
- Razor blades or metal scrapers directly on gelcoat or paint
- Harsh solvents that soften or stain the surface
- Pressure washers to blast decals off
- Too much heat, which can damage gelcoat or paint
Ghosting#
After removing old decals, you may see a faint outline, called ghosting, where the surface was protected from the sun. Polishing may reduce it on gelcoat. A full wrap will usually cover it, but it can show through light or translucent films, so mention it to your installer.
Residue must be removed completely#
Even a thin layer of old adhesive can affect how new film bonds. After removal, clean the area thoroughly. Your installer will usually do a final clean right before installation.
Should you do it yourself?#
Small decals can be a manageable owner job. Large or old graphics are slower and riskier. Many installers include decal removal in their preparation, which also means they take responsibility for the surface.
