Small decals, such as boat names, registration numbers, or simple logos, are often easy enough to apply yourself. With some patience and the right technique, you can get a professional-looking result. Here's how.
What you'll need#
- The decal, with transfer tape
- Mild soap and water
- A suitable surface cleaner, such as isopropyl alcohol if safe for your surface
- Masking tape
- A squeegee or plastic applicator
- A tape measure and level
Step 1: Choose the right conditions#
Work in mild, dry weather, out of direct sun and wind. Very hot or cold surfaces make application harder. Check the decal maker's temperature range.
Step 2: Clean the surface#
Wash the area with soap and water, then rinse and dry. Wipe with a suitable cleaner to remove wax and oils. Let it dry completely.
Step 3: Position the decal#
Tape the decal in place with masking tape. Measure and level it. Step back and check it from a distance. Adjust until it looks right.
Step 4: Hinge method#
Place a strip of masking tape across the middle of the decal to create a hinge. Lift one half, peel off the backing paper, and squeegee that half down from the center outward. Remove the hinge tape, then repeat with the other half.
Step 5: Remove transfer tape#
Slowly peel the transfer tape back at a low angle. If letters lift, press them back down and try again.
Step 6: Finish#
Press down edges firmly. Small bubbles can sometimes be pushed out. Avoid washing the boat for a short time, as recommended by the decal maker.
Wet application#
Some decals allow wet application, which makes positioning easier. Check the instructions, as not all decals support it.
