In tropical regions, humidity is high for much of the year. Moisture in the air can condense on a hull, slow the drying of cleaning products, and get trapped under film. Installers working in humid climates have to manage these conditions carefully to get a strong bond.
How humidity affects installation#
Film needs a clean, dry surface to bond properly. In humid conditions:
- Moisture can condense on surfaces, especially when the hull is cooler than the air
- Cleaning solutions and alcohol wipes may take longer to evaporate
- Water can hide in seams, fittings, and around hardware
Even a very thin layer of moisture under film can weaken adhesion and cause edges to lift later.
Watch for dew#
Early mornings often bring dew on hulls, even when the air feels dry later in the day. Installers usually wait until surfaces are completely dry before starting. Late evenings can bring condensation again, so work may stop before the temperature drops.
Managing the conditions#
Experienced installers in humid climates use a combination of:
- Working during the driest part of the day
- Shade or covered areas, which also keep hulls from overheating
- Thorough drying of every surface before film goes on
- Extra attention to seams and fittings where water hides
- Fans or air movement to help surfaces dry
Curing in humid conditions#
Adhesive continues to bond after installation. In some conditions, this can take longer. Follow your installer's advice on when to wash the boat and when to use it. Avoid heavy rain or washing on fresh edges if your installer advises waiting.
