Manufacturers publish technical data sheets, often called spec sheets, for their wrap films. These documents can look confusing, but a few key details tell you a lot about whether a film suits your boat.
Film type#
The sheet should say whether the film is cast or calendered. Cast films usually conform better to curves. Our marine vs cast vinyl guide explains the difference.
Thickness#
Thickness is usually given in mils or microns. Thinner films often conform better, while thicker films may resist damage better. Both have uses.
Adhesive#
Look for:
- Adhesive type, such as permanent or removable
- Air-release channels, which help prevent bubbles
- Repositionability during installation
Durability#
Spec sheets often list expected outdoor durability. Check the conditions this applies to. Some list different figures for vertical and horizontal surfaces, or for different climates.
Temperature ranges#
Look for minimum application temperature and service temperature range. This matters for installation and for hot boats.
Recommended uses#
Sheets usually list what the film is designed for, such as vehicles, signs, or marine use. Make sure boats or similar applications are covered.
Compatible laminates#
For printable films, the sheet may list compatible overlaminates. Using the right combination is important.

- Is this film recommended for marine use?
- What does the warranty cover on boats?
- How does it perform on horizontal surfaces?
Spec sheets don't tell the whole story#
A spec sheet describes how a film performs under test conditions. Real-world results depend on preparation, installation, exposure, and care. Two installers using the same film can get very different outcomes. Use spec sheets to check that a film is suitable, then ask installers how they have seen it perform on boats over several years.
Ask for the product name in writing#
A quote that names the exact product makes it possible to look up its spec sheet. Vague descriptions like "premium marine vinyl" can't be checked.
