In wet climates, boats can stay damp for much of the year. Rain, fog, and shade create the perfect conditions for mildew, green algae, and even moss to grow on surfaces. On a wrapped boat, growth can stain the film and hold moisture against edges. Regular, gentle cleaning keeps it under control.
Where growth starts#
Growth tends to start in predictable places:
- Shaded areas that never fully dry
- Edges and seams where water collects
- Around fittings, drains, and scuppers
- Under covers that don't breathe
- North-facing sides that get little sun
Check these areas first when you inspect the boat.
Wash before growth builds up#
Regular washing with a mild, wrap-safe soap is the best defense. Light growth wipes off easily. Thick, established growth is harder to remove and more likely to leave stains. In wet seasons, a quick wash every few weeks can save a lot of scrubbing later.
Removing mildew safely#
Many mildew removers contain bleach or strong chemicals that may damage vinyl. Use only products approved for your film, and test any new product on a small hidden area first. Rinse thoroughly afterward. Avoid stiff brushes on the film.
Ventilation and covers#
Covers should breathe. A non-breathable cover traps moisture underneath, which encourages mildew on both the boat and the cover. Ventilate cabins and storage lockers too, as damp interiors can spread growth.
Drainage#
Make sure water drains away from film edges. Clear drains and scuppers regularly. Standing water at seams can encourage growth and lifting.
Covered moorage#
Covered slips keep rain off but often add shade and dampness. Our covered moorage guide explains how to manage the trade-offs.
Winter months#
Boats used less in winter still need attention. Clean and inspect them periodically, so growth doesn't take hold over the wettest months.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I use bleach on a wrap?#
Not unless the film maker approves it. Bleach can damage or discolor some films.
Does moss damage vinyl?#
Growth can stain film and hold moisture against edges. Remove it gently and regularly.
How often should I clean?#
Regularly, based on conditions. See our wrap-safe cleaning guide.
