Covered moorage is common in rainy regions, where boats are kept in slips under a roof. It offers real protection from rain, snow, and direct sun, which can help a wrap last. But covered slips also bring shade, dampness, birds, and tight quarters, which need attention.
Benefits for a wrap#
- Less direct sun on the upper surfaces, which may slow fading
- Less rain, snow, and leaf debris on the boat
- Easier cleaning and maintenance in bad weather
- Some protection from wind-driven rain and hail
Challenges to manage#
- Shade and still air can keep surfaces damp, encouraging mildew
- Roof structures may drip water or debris onto the boat
- Tight slips bring hulls close to pilings and neighbors
- Birds often roost in roof framing
Controlling mildew#
Ventilate the boat when you can, and clean regularly with wrap-safe products before growth builds up. Our wet climates guide explains safe mildew removal.
Bird droppings#
Birds love the sheltered beams of covered moorage. Droppings can stain film if left, so clean them off promptly with water and a soft cloth. Deterrents on the roof framing can reduce the problem.
Fenders, lines, and pilings#
Tight covered slips may bring hulls close to pilings and walkways. Use clean fender covers, set fenders at the right height, and tie lines so the boat can't ride against pilings when wakes or wind move it.
Uneven sun#
Even under a roof, low-angle sun can reach one side of the boat in the morning or evening. Over time, this may cause uneven fading. Compare both sides during inspections.
Lighting and inspections#
Covered moorage can be dim, which makes inspections harder. Use a flashlight held at a low angle to spot lifted edges, scratches, and mildew. Do a more thorough check when the boat is out in daylight, at least a few times a year.
Frequently asked questions#
