Many boat wraps feature photos, illustrations, or artwork. But just because an image is easy to find online doesn't mean you're free to print it on your boat. Most images are owned by someone, and using them without permission can lead to takedown demands or legal claims. A little understanding of licensing helps you avoid trouble.
Copyright basics#
Photos, illustrations, and designs are generally protected by copyright from the moment they're created. The creator, or whoever they've transferred rights to, decides how they can be used. Printing an image on a boat wrap is a use that usually requires permission. This is general information, not legal advice, so ask a professional if you're unsure about a specific case.
Stock images#
Stock photo sites sell licenses to use their images. Before buying, check:
- Whether the license allows large-format printing
- Whether commercial use is allowed, if the boat is used for business
- Any limits on print size, number of copies, or use on products
- Whether an extended license is needed for your use
Standard licenses don't always cover large prints or commercial products, so read the terms carefully.
Commissioning original artwork#
Hiring an artist, photographer, or designer to create something original is often the cleanest solution. Agree in writing who owns the final artwork and how it can be used, including whether you can reuse it on other boats or marketing.
Using your own photos#

Logos and brands#
Using another company's logo, such as a sponsor's, requires their permission. Sponsors should supply their own approved logo files.
Licensed patterns#
