Printed boat wraps are big. A single panel might be several feet tall and many feet long. An image that looks sharp on a phone screen may look blurry or blocky when it's enlarged to that size. Understanding resolution helps you supply images that print well and avoid disappointment when the wrap goes on.
What resolution means#
A digital photo is made of pixels, tiny squares of color. Resolution describes how many pixels an image contains. When an image is printed large, its pixels are spread out across a bigger area. If there aren't enough pixels, the result looks soft, blurry, or blocky.
Viewing distance changes the rules#
Boats are usually seen from a distance, which helps. A large print viewed from the dock doesn't need the same detail per inch as a photo held in your hand. But some areas are seen up close, such as near boarding points or on a console, and these need more detail. Your installer can tell you what resolution is needed for each part of your design.
How to check your images#
- Look at the image dimensions in pixels, not the file size in megabytes
- Ask your installer what pixel dimensions are needed for your print size
- Zoom in on screen to the size it will be printed and look for blurriness or blocky edges
If an image looks soft at full size on screen, it will look soft on the boat.
Vector vs raster#
Logos and text should be vector files, which are made of shapes rather than pixels and can be scaled to any size without losing quality. Photos are raster images and need high resolution. Our artwork files guide explains file types.
Upscaling software#
Software can enlarge images, sometimes with impressive results, but it can also add artificial-looking detail. Treat upscaled images with caution and review them carefully at full size.
Test prints#
For important designs, ask for a test print of a key section at full size. It's the best way to see exactly how sharp the final result will be.

The print may look blurry or pixelated, especially up close.
Can you check my files?#
